The 2025 Gold Coast Oceania Open took place from 1–2 November at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium in Queensland, Australia. Designated as an IJF Grand Prix, it attracted elite judoka from across the globe—providing a rare opportunity for Australian athletes to compete for valuable world ranking points on home soil.

Western Australia was proudly represented by nine athletes, all competing under the Australian flag across both competition days. Their performances showcased the depth of talent emerging from the WA judo community, with several athletes claiming medals and top-five finishes.

Day 1 – Strong Performances Across the Lighter Divisions

Day 1 featured WA athletes Maelie Tournier (UWA Judo Club – Women’s Under 52kg), Saya Middleton (Perth Judo Club – Women’s Under 63kg), Vas Middleton (Perth Judo Club – Men’s Under 66kg), Timeo Tournier (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 66kg), Jordon Greenbank (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 73kg), and Kohsei Toyoshima (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 73kg).

Maelie Tournier opened her campaign in the quarter-final against fellow Australian Clarissa Vumbaca, securing a confident ippon victory. In the semi-final, she met Hong Kong’s Shuk Ki Tsui, where she was defeated, but rebounded strongly in the repechage—claiming a yuko victory over Hong Kong’s Lok Lu Li to earn a bronze medal.

Saya Middleton began with an impressive ippon win over Hong Kong’s Ching Man Mak in the Round of 16. She then faced Croatia’s Iva Oberan—the eventual gold medallist—and, despite a spirited effort, was defeated. In the repechage, Saya narrowly missed a podium finish after losing by yuko to the USA’s Emily Daniela Jaspe, concluding her campaign in a commendable top-seven position.

Vas Middleton defeated Indonesia’s Muhammad Fathur Rohman by ippon in the opening round and followed with a yuko victory over the USA’s Bilegt Erdenetsogt in the quarter-final. His run ended in the semi-final with an ippon loss to Finland’s Luukas Saha, and in the bronze medal contest he was narrowly edged out by the USA’s Lenny Sheynfeld, finishing 5th overall.

Timeo Tournier opened his campaign in the Round of 16 against New Zealand’s Tatalong Hannarong, securing victory by waza-ari-awasete-ippon. He was then defeated by Cyprus’ Georgios Balarjishvili in the quarter-final by ippon. Entering the repechage, Timeo faced the USA’s Lenny Sheynfeld but was again defeated, finishing his tournament in 7th place.

Jordon Greenbank opened with a yuko win over Finland’s Valtteri Olin before being defeated by Ireland’s Joshua Green in the semi-final. In the bronze medal match, he met fellow Western Australian Kohsei Toyoshima but fell short by waza-ari, placing 5th.

Kohsei Toyoshima started strong with a waza-ari victory over Cyprus’ Kyprianos Andreou, before losing to Canada’s Justin Lemire in the quarter-final. Bouncing back through the repechage, Kohsei defeated Great Britain’s Eric Ham by ippon and then overcame teammate Jordon Greenbank in the bronze medal match—earning a bronze medal for Australia and Western Australia.

Day 2 – Gold and Bronze for WA in the Middle and Heavy Divisions

Day 2 saw Maria Swan (UWA Judo Club – Women’s Under 78kg), Keishin Ochi (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 81kg), Alexander Vasilyev (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 81kg), and Angus Baird (UWA Judo Club – Men’s Under 90kg) take to the mat.

Maria Swan delivered a dominant performance throughout the day. She opened with an ippon win against Indonesia’s Tika Syafitri, followed by another ippon victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chieh-Hsi Wang in the semi-final. In the final, Maria faced Chinese Taipei’s Shu Huei Hsu Wang, once again claiming victory by ippon to secure gold—a phenomenal achievement and one of the highlights of the tournament for WA.

Keishin Ochi produced another podium finish for Western Australia. He began with a waza-ari-awasete-ippon win over Indonesia’s Diki Harato, then defeated New Zealand’s Maarten De Ridder by ippon to reach the semi-finals. After a close loss by yuko to Finland’s Eetu Ihanamaki, Keishin rebounded to defeat fellow Australian Ryan Koenig by waza-ari, earning a bronze medal.

Alexander Vasilyev faced Greece’s Jordan Kouros in the Round of 16 but was defeated by waza-ari-awasete-ippon, ending his run early. Angus Baird also met tough opposition, losing by ippon to Indonesia’s I Made Dharma in the Round of 16.
