Western Australia’s Maria Swan has wrapped up her campaign at the 2025 OTP Bank World Senior Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary, representing Australia with pride in the Women’s Under 78kg division.

Maria received a first-round bye and stepped onto the tatami in the Round of 32 against Slovenia’s Metka Lobnik. In a hard-fought contest, Maria displayed exceptional composure and tactical discipline, keeping the match close throughout. With less than a minute remaining on the clock, Lobnik managed to secure a hold-down earning yuko score. Despite Maria’s determined efforts, the score held through to the end of the match.

Though unplaced, Maria’s performance on the world stage was nothing short of inspiring. Competing among the best 78kg judoka in the world, she demonstrated both courage and capability, showcasing the depth of talent coming out of Western Australia.

Judo WA is proud of Maria’s efforts and achievements. Her selection for the World Championships is a testament to years of hard work and commitment to the sport. We know this is just the beginning of many more international appearances for Maria.

Congratulations, Maria, on your world-level debut. All of WA is proud of you.
